Can I use an external DVD drive to bypass my internal DVD drive that has "corrupted files"? - internal dvd recorder

HP engineers say that my own computer files on the DVD "corrupt". I consider his recommendation that I load Windows. Can I simply an external DVD drive with the assumption that he can read and write the contents of my heart, because it has a USB port on your computer elsewhere? I have Windows XP. Thank you for your help.
